If u guys want some intense training and great eating tips come here! This place has changed my life no joke. Never been so motivated for anything in my life.
(who is now a coach here!)
About 18 months ago, after years of being out of shape, I started running, changed my diet, and started going to a local gym. Although I lost the weight and got into decent shape, I quickly hit a wall where I was not improving in strength, shape, or conditioning. About three months ago, I found Max Shippee’s CrossFit 1440 box and have been going pretty much every day since. • The CrossFit approach is having really noticeable effects on strength, balance, and overall fitness, and I’ve gained strength (and changed by body shape) much faster than I expected, and far beyond any results I would have gotten from the running and gym routine that I was in before. • Max is a dedicated professional and is passionate about the approach and execution in the box. He stresses form and fundamentals, and it pays off in every aspect of the workout. That enables everyone in the gym to push themselves without getting hurt. I’m always motivated to push myself in the box, but it always stays fun no matter how hard it gets. Even with the major changes that have happened in only 3 months, I feel like there’s a lot of runway to get better and I look forward to the workouts every day.
CrossFit 1440 is the best! Max is the coach you need to turn your life around. He doesn’t take any excuses but he also knows your limits. He’ll push you past what you believed you could accomplish but he doesn’t put your body at risk for injury. Trust me when I say that I wouldn’t have ever imagined being able to do what I can do now. The WODS are fun and Max really stresses good form over everything. CrossFit 1440 is a fun, supportive box. My kids love coming here and so do I. I can’t miss a week! DO IT!
I was an athlete in college, and now that I’m done playing I joined CrossFit 1440 to stay in shape…or I guess get in shape!! It’s a perfect combination of competition, motivation, sweat, and fun! The owner Max is a great coach, and his wife Alice is as kind as can be. I was hesitant to join a CrossFit gym because you watch people on TV and they’re lifting unimaginable weights that would crush the rest of us, but don’t be intimidated!!! Max and every member of 1440 is encouraging and looking to help you, and Max does a great job tailoring the workouts to your abilities. Take a risk and join CrossFit1440…You may get sweaty, but you’ll meet some amazing people and push yourself harder than you ever thought you could! —Caitlin B.
Awesome workout with a great trainer!!!
After several unsuccessful attempts to find a CrossFit box where I felt comfortable, I was beginning to feel a lot like the CrossFit Goldilocks. I ventured to one CrossFit box where the coach spent most of the time texting on his cell phone and talking to his buddies who were hanging out but weren’t working out. I left that place only to stumble into a box where they threw me into the workout with very little guidance.
I was starting to think that maybe CrossFit wasn’t my thing and that I needed to find another way to get my mojo back. Fortunately, just when I thought all hope was lost, I happened upon the gem that is CrossFit 1440. Once I met Max and went through one of his workouts I knew that CrossFit 1440 was “just right” and it was going to be the place that I could call home. • Max is a fantastic coach and he makes sure you know the proper form for each move before you try to do it. He also offers you lots of encouragement and he has a great knack for making you want to challenge yourself. The bonus to CrossFit 1440 is that not only are you getting a solid workout every time you come to class but you also learn all kinds of useful information related to health. Max is super knowledgeable about all things, mind, body, and spirit related. He keeps up with the latest health information and regularly shares that with his clients. Max is a walking encyclopedia of wellness and I learn something new every time I am there. • CrossFit 1440 is a great place and I strongly recommend it! It may be your “just right.”
If it was possible to give more star rating I would give it 100… If you want a life change 360° CrossFit 1440 is for you. No matter how big or small, tall or short they are able to work with you and help you through your healthy workout journey. Live longer and stronger CrossFit 1440.
I have been going to Max for over 4 years and every workout has been an awesome experience. You will always feel welcomed and comfortable working with Max and the CrossFit 1440 crew. Can’t say enough about this guy!
I LOVE CrossFit 1440!!!! Max (trainer/owner) is awesome and his wife Alice is such a sweetheart, they are really good people! He is really good about correcting your form and technique. It is unlike any gym I’ve been to. Everyone is really down to earth, welcoming, and encouraging. So if you want a great workout with really awesome people 1440 is the place to be!
I love love it!!! It changed my life!!! Thank you, Max!!
I’ve been going to CF1440 for a little over a year now and I have had a great time working out with Max and all the CrossFitters. First, I’ve been weight lifting for the last fifteen years, done a number of triathlons and always been very active. That being said, everyday Max still kicks my butt. The workouts are amazing. They continually change and always challenge your body which is how results are gotten. • Max, as a coach, balances encouragement, tough love, and effort by example. He models the movements for those of us who tend to forget, and encourages us to push weight, BUT he is able to identify when we have reached our max. Setting boundaries is very important, so we don’t get hurt, which is well known in CF. By the way, he works out with us from time to time, and it’s nice to see its not easy for him either. • If you’re looking for a box where the coach is motivating but not condescending and a group of people who appreciate laughs and each other, this is the place for you.
I found CrossFit 1440 through a Groupon deal. I was a little apprehensive because I have heard of people getting injured and wasn’t sure what it’d be like going in. Max is the owner and trainer and is great! He led me through 3 Foundations Classes and ensured that I had the proper form. • Before you do any of the workouts, he makes sure that you know what you’re doing. You will compete against yourself and against others, and have fun seeing what your body can do. • If you were like me and worried about CrossFit, don’t be. I’m a female and enjoy it! There are a lot of females there.
Been working out here for awhile. I’m getting in to pretty good shape from the workouts. Max knows his stuff. A great group of people workout here and it is not overcrowded. I would recommend this place to anyone willing to work hard because they will see the results.
I found CrossFit 1440 through a Groupon deal. I visited a few others in the local area, but just didn’t feel comfortable when I walked in , so I decided on CF1440. When I first met Max I thought he had great energy and was well-versed in nutrition and health. He listened to my concerns and provides input on how to do each exercise correctly. He’s professional, personable, fun, outgoing, a great motivator and trainer/coach. What I most appreciate about Max is that if he doesn’t see me for a couple of days or a week, I get a “checking in” text message from him. I mean who does that? That’s AWESOME!!!! Never in my whole entire lifetime of working out have I ever had that. He truly cares about his clients and it definitely shows! Thanks Max for giving me a new lease on life.. also, I want to thank the other trainers as well — Luke, you are awesome!
CrossFit 1440 is such an awesome place to work out! Max is great, the other assistant coaches are great, but it’s really the sense of community and friendly competition that keeps me going back day after day. There’s a mixture of “Hah! I beat you by 1 second!” and “You can do it! You got this!” that I just absolutely love. I end up staying at the gym for hours even after completing the WOD. • What I also love about CrossFit 1440 is how it isn’t just a place to work out. I feel like I’m training my mind as well as my body. Max is really great with talking to you outside of class about anything ranging from what little movements you can do to meet a certain goal (like a muscle up…grrr…) to different diets that may work for you, along with a pretty damn good nutritional background. I am constantly asking him questions, and he is awesome at answering them, even though my questions tend to be really long. • CrossFit 1440 is an overall AWESOME box, full of fun, energetic, encouraging people who like to do silly things but are serious when it comes down to WOD time. I love it.
CrossFit 1440 will change your life, if you let it. This is the original first CrossFit gym in the South Bay, but it used to be under different names: CrossFit Thrive, CrossFit Hermosa, and CrossFit Hax. The name may be different, but the people are the same, and they’re awesome. Other reviewers have posted how great the community at 1440 is, I couldn’t agree more! • All the trainers here are very good at individualizing workouts to fit your needs and injuries. They also know how far to push you without causing injuries. • I’ve been coming here for a year now, with fantastic results. I’ve lost 15 pounds and am down from over 20% body fat to 13% (for a female that’s pretty good!). I’ve gone from a size 10 to a size 4. • But better than the weight loss is the confidence you get from doing the difficult work and learning new skills. • Prior to CrossFit, I had never lifted Olympic style weights. I think all women worry that they’ll bulk up and begin to look manly, but actually the opposite happens, the more weight you lift, the stronger you get and the better you look! • About me: I was addicted to free style step class, had a membership at Bally’s and 24H, ran about 10 miles a week but was not as fit as I am now. Most recently, I’ve done p90x, insanity and asylum, all to completion and then some. None of those programs get you in as good a shape as CrossFit!
I absolutely love this place! I found CrossFit 1440 through Groupon, it was such a great deal. The gym is pretty easy to find and it is also on a bike route. Even though there are no bike racks, I’m sure you could keep your bike inside without it being an issue. They also have a single person bathroom which is nice if you need to change clothes from work.
I live in Redondo Beach and the commute to Lomita was very easy, traffic did not seem to be an issue. Parking is easy to find at this place as well.
CrossFit 1440 is a family run business. Max and his wife are very friendly and personable. They really try to know all of their clients and even introduce clients to each other to make for a more friendly atmosphere.
The classes have a good mix of men and women of varying ages. I’ve seen couples, buddies, and even a family of a dad, mom, and son workout at this place.
Max really pushes you to work hard! I can be kind of lazy when it comes to workouts, and I am kind of a quitter when something starts to “hurt” or “feel uncomfortable,” but as soon as I tried to “give up” Max would push me to keep going and push my limits further. I always left this place feeling amazing because of how hard I just worked out. I am definitely one of those people that need that kind of motivation and push!
If you are looking for a tough workout to get into shape, or if you just want to expand your fitness, this is the best place to go. I am hoping that I can save up some money so that I can return to this place, because I really miss it!!
Truly enjoyed my experience at this Box. They truly embody their motto; small box, big heart. Ego is checked at the door. You’re made to feel welcome. Max the owner/trainer is extremely knowledgeable about the body, fitness and nutrition. I’d recommend this gym to absolutely anyone, beginner thru advanced CrossFitters.
I joined Max’s CrossFit back in October after two years of sitting on the couch eating bon-bons. I was a college athlete, but I had lost all my motivation, coordination, strength, and fitness. Slowly but surely, Max got me back to a place in my life where I am proud of myself for the things I accomplish both in and out of the gym. CrossFit is more than just a gym or a workout, its a way of life. • Many people say that CrossFit is too competitive or too this or too that. And honestly, it is competitive and it is hard. But 24 hour fitness doesn’t do that. They don’t keep you accountable. If you are like me and you want to see real changes and put in real effort, CrossFit is for you. If you like the treadmill day after day, then CrossFit isn’t for you. Its hard. You will sweat. You will hurt. But in the end you will be proud of what you did and end up annoying all your Facebook friends with your many posts and tags of how awesome you are! Thanks Max 🙂
Max & Alice (owner/trainer, owner/photographer) are AMAZING! I miss them & CrossFit 1440 so much since we moved away. Max really cares about his clients, treating them more like family than anything. He was able to work around my injuries, and never made me feel bad for not being able to do certain things. If you are lucky enough to train at the same time as Alice, not only will you probably end up with some great photos of yourself, but you will never meet a better motivator! I can’t say enough about CrossFit 1440, Max & Alice…except to go try it for yourself!
Max runs an awesome program! He’s a great coach, friendly and approachable….but he knows how to motivate you to work hard. The members of the gym are great, genuine people who all share the same desire to be the best they can be. I highly recommend CrossFit 1440 if you are interested in getting into the best shape of your life!
I love CrossFit 1440 and the family environment. Max, the owner, is a great motivator as well as a great coach. He’s not a drill sergeant by any means but pushes you using positive encouragement. He keeps it real, and is very knowledgeable when it comes to technique and form. As an NASM certified personal trainer, and performance coach myself, I’m very apprehensive when I walk into a CrossFit box because a lot of the owner/trainers can’t teach proper form, however, with Max, I know I’m in good hands. If you want a challenging, yet safe workout in a great atmosphere, check this place out.
Supportive, uplifting and motivating. It’s an amazing experience and Max is the absolute best!
